Carpooling just a few clicks away.

Melburnians have the chance to car pool like never before.

An Australia-wide website has been launched encouraging people to carpool.

The web-site allows people to type in where they want to go and they will be matched with anyone who has similar travel details.  Once there is a match the website sends you notification and you can contact the person anonymously.

The idea came to the creator of the web-site when stuck on one of Melbourne's busy freeways.  In the morning almost every single car in the peak hour rush has just one person in it, yet everyone is going in the same direction.  Surely a neighbour is travelling to a similiar destination at about the same time.

Enviroment Victoria Transport campaigner Cathy McNaughton applauded the website.  "It is a great initiative that will save money and help the enviroment," Ms McNaughton said.  "If someone is interested in car pooling but doesn't know anyone interested in the idea in their area, then ozcarpool will help them."

Car pool revs up.

A Melbourne mans simple scheme to unclog the city's congested streets may put him a step ahead of many experts now pondering Melbourne's transport problems.

The West Brunswick man is the brains behind Ozcarpool, a website service that matches car commuters in cities all over Australia with fellow travellers.

The site was launched in May 2005.  Users only need to see the huge savings in fuel and maintenance that result in sharing a lift.
